Taekwondo Vs. Jiu-Jitsu: Which Is Better For Self Defense?
Taekwondo and Jiu-Jitsu are two highly popular martial arts across the globe. They’re widely practiced by all genders and ages.
Though the two sports focus on teaching effectiveness fighting techniques, they’ve entirely different fighting styles.
And this brings us to our central question;
Which of the two sports should you choose for self-defense purposes?

Taekwondo traces its origin to Korea, hence the name Korean Karate. The name Tae Kwon do simply mean the way of the foot and fist. This can be translated to mean the art of kicking and punching.
The sport teaches you how to use strong punches, kicks, blocks, and even devastating footwork to easily disable an attacker.
If you happen to watch a taekwondo demonstration, you’ll witness jumping and flying techniques. One such kick is known as the roundhouse kick—which involves kicking your opponent horizontally with the ball on your foot top. This kick is pretty fast, powerful, and deadly if thrown carelessly.
The art can be learned by both women and men, and kids and adults alike.
The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, on the other hand, traces its origin to Brazil. It’s entirely different from the Korean karate in that it doesn’t rely on punching and kicks.
Instead, it is a ground fighting art that focuses on using joint locks and chokes to easily disable an attacker. It lets you use your assailant’s power against them. It also involves using clothing as weapon, attacking the vital points, etc., making it entirely suited for real life self-defense situations.
One of the sport’s most popular techniques is the triangular choke. This involves wrapping your legs around the neck of your opponent, such that you restrict blood flow to their brain by squeezing their neck using your legs. This technique is quite deadly and can render your aggressor unconscious.
Like the taekwondo, this sport is also ideal for all genders (both men and women) and ages (kids and adults).
Which Sport Should You Choose for Self Defense?
From the above explanation, we can easily conclude that both sports are deadly and are ideal for self-defense. They’re both suitable for all genders and ages.
However, how you use them will heavily depend on the situations you find yourself in. If you’re facing your attacker in standing position, you can use the taekwondo art to throw long range, brutal kicks, and elbows. And if your attacker goes to the ground, you can easily disable them using the BJJ art.
As you can see, both sports will actually complement each other. Where possible, I’d recommend you to learn both arts to ensure you’ve both the self-defense benefits of BJJ and taekwondo.
